Professional Golf Is Not As Glamorous As You Might Think
By Foursome | June 12, 2008
At any given time there are only a few hundred professional golf players who get to play for a living, and on a regular basis.
Playing golf for a living means fighting big odds. These men and women must be able to shoot below par consistently, time and time again, and on golf courses that they may only have played on one or two times in the past. They must withstand the stresses of traveling the globe, resist the tiredness of time zone changes, and just leap right into a tournament to compete with some of the world’s greatest players.
Sounds Tough, Doesn’t It?
Yes it’s tough being at the top. In order to continue playing, professional golf players are just like independent contractors who, when called to “work”, must do so while bringing their very best game, day in and day out - if they want to continue living the dream.You may be under the impression that professional golfers get signed on to hefty contracts that pay out millions of dollars, much like professional athletes (baseball players, basketball teams, or football stars), however, this is not the case. If Barry Bonds has a bad month due to an injury, he still gets to cash in his big checks, but if Tiger Woods or David Duval is out of golf for a month or so, they do not earn anything from past tournaments.
The truth is that these professional golfers even loose money when they cannot compete in the running tournaments. And they may even compete but come out on the loosing end. They must pay their own way; pay for their own meals, put up transportation costs, housing expenses, etc. Even the top winners in golf make much less than your mediocre athletes from baseball, football, and basketball.
Major Golf Tours
Please don’t get the impression that playing professional golf is not as pleasing or lucrative as other sports, it just pays less. Most of you would die for such an opportunity - the chance to support your lifestyle by playing on the most beautiful courses around the world.
Unfortunately, only a few select men and women with amazing natural talent reach such prestige levels in this sport. Upon reaching this monumental feat of being a professional golf player, the major tours in which the pros compete include:
* Senior Tour
* PGA Tour
* LPGA Tour
* Futures Tour
* European Tour
* Asian Tour
* Buy.com Tour
In addition these tours, there are various other smaller, regional mini tours that provide the chance for golf players with less experience to hopefully break into the ranks of the pros. These mini tours are played throughout the United States, Asia, and Europe. But if a player ever wants to really hit the big leagues they must play in one of the major tours as listed above.
